Intermediate & Inspired
Ready to level up on the wheel? Join Intermediate & Inspired — a 6-week journey from a solid foundation to new heights.
Course Overview
This course is built around core skill areas rather than a strict week-by-week script — because every potter walks in with a different foundation, and this class meets you where you are.
Back to Basics — Throwing skills boot camp, where Liz will get a feel for the group's skills and set the direction for the course ahead.
Big Beautiful Bowls — Push your forms bigger and more confident, refining wall control and symmetry at scale.
Birds of a Feather: Throwing Sets — Learn to throw consistent, matching pieces — the skill behind dinnerware sets.
Thoughtfully Made: Designing Your Work — Move from "making a pot" to making your pot, with intentional design choices in form and finish.
Leveling Up: Throwing Larger — Build the strength and technique needed to work with bigger amounts of clay.
Tailored to the Group — As the course progresses, additional techniques are woven in based on what the class needs or wants to explore.
This class is ideal for potters with some experience on the wheel, who are looking to learn new techniques and push past the beginner level. In order for all students to get the most out of class, the following skills are required:
Generally comfortable centering clay (a bad day here and there is totally normal!)
Can weigh, wedge, and prepare clay for throwing independently
Can comfortably throw 2lbs of clay
Can throw a basic cylinder and bowl form independently
Can trim and add attachments with the slip & score method
Comfortable using basic tools (ribs, needle tool, wire)
Familiarity with basic glazing techniques (dipping, brushing, wax resist)
You don't need to check every box perfectly — if you're close, reach out to instructor Liz via email for advice: liz@theanuran.com
What's Included
Your class fee covers firing, clay for in-class work, studio glazes, tools, and other materials — everything you need is provided. That said, if you already have go-to tools or an apron from previous classes, feel free to bring them along! Since you're already experienced, you may find you throw more comfortably with equipment you know.
Good to Know
Classes are limited to just 8 students, so you'll always get personal attention and enjoy a cozy, semi-private atmosphere — and trust us, when learning hands-on skills like pottery, that makes all the difference.
Important: Classes must have a minimum of 4 students signed up to run.
A quick tip: long nails will make your throwing journey much more challenging. For the best class experience, we encourage removing long nails for the class duration.
Practice Time
This is a more advanced class, so most trimming and finishing work happens outside of class time. Plan to use open studio hours throughout the 6 weeks to keep up with each project and get the most out of every topic. You'll receive an email before class starts with open studio hours, and Liz also offers additional practice time when she's working in the studio throughout the week.
About the Instructor
Liz focuses on wheel-thrown, carved, and illustrated ceramic art. She studied ceramics in college while pursuing her degree in scientific illustration and has exhibited her work at pottery shows and festivals. Liz loves the process of helping potters build solid, confident skills from the ground up. You can check out her work on Instagram @theANURAN
